Swords and Sci-Fi: A Lifelong Nerd Odyssey

Swords and Sci-Fi: A Lifelong Nerd Odyssey

For Lady Di, being a nerd hits differently when Star Trek taught you how to read English. From an awkward and bullied kid, Lady Di now embraces her nerdom with the confidence of Warrior Princess Diana herself (Wonder Woman, for the uninitiated). From battling virtual foes on her N64 to boldly exploring the final frontier with the U.S.S. Enterprise, Lady Di's love for all things nerdy is enormous.

Before video games and comics, Lady Di loved Star Trek. Her parents always had the show on in their home. "Being ESL (English as a Second Language), I was almost illiterate and held back in Grade 3 as I grew more disinterested in school. Then, in Grade 4, they introduced the subject of space. I thought, like the U.S.S. Enterprise!? Then I discovered there were Star Trek novels- now reading was all I wanted to do." She started reading Star Trek novels, collecting toys and statues, attending conventions, and playing Star Trek Continuum when the other kids played Magic. This early sci-fi obsession laid the foundation for a lifetime of nerdy adventures.

From Gamers to Collectors

The N64 became Lady Di's next playground, fostering epic battles in Goldeneye and Star Fox. She competed in Starfox competitions at a time when "girl gamers" were rare sightings. This competitive spirit later translated into the world of comic books. Lady Di transitioned from player to collector, amassing an impressive collection of comic books that would require their own storage.

A Collector's Paradise

When asked about her favourite collectibles, her Soulfire Grace statue, with its removable wings and stunning design, holds a special place in her heart. But her collection goes beyond just aesthetics. A sealed MiniMates collection, boxes of graded and slabbed comic books, and a stack of sketches from comic book legends like Jim Lee and David Finch showcase her appreciation for the artistry behind the stories.

A Universe of Fandom, A Community of Nerds

Lady Di's nerdy journey isn't just about collecting cool stuff (although let's face it, that's pretty darn cool). It's about the connections she's made along the way. From attending conventions in her youth to getting to work with actors from her favourite franchises, Lady Di embodies the spirit of Blank Nerd: a love and appreciation of awesome, nerdy things!
